The Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation is the leading Czech foundation supporting sustainable development projects in all regions of the Czech Republic. Since it was established in 1991 it has supported over 2160 projects implemented by NGOs, schools, municipal authorities and individuals, and allocated CZK 188 million in grants.
Together with affiliated foundations in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, it is a part of the Environmental Partnership for Sustainable Development association.
The Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation fulfils its mission by awarding grants and implementing targeted programmes. These programmes help the Foundation to achieve, as efficiently as possible, positive changes in its fields of interest. This is accomplished through the Foundation’s cooperation with local partners by providing them with technical support and grants. The Foundation implements the following programmes: Open Grant Programme, Tree of Life, Greenways, Public Spaces, Sustainable Transport Programme, Schools for Sustainable Development, Partnership for Kolín Region and Energy alternatives programme.
The main goal of the programme is to support public engagement in civil society. The Programme focuses mainly on areas, which are not given enough attention by local or State authorities, other NGOs or other Environmental Partnership programmes. The programme is financed from the Foundation’s own endowment revenues and by the C.S. Mott Foundation.
The programme helps to create healthy and pleasant everyday life environment by supporting NGOs, municipalities and other partners in their tree-planting efforts and by helping them take care of the countryside and public spaces. People have the opportunity to help trees by organising public collections, voting for the Tree of the Year or planting trees themselves. Skanska is the general partner of the programme.
Greenways are trails, routes or natural corridors used in accordance with their environmental function and potential for sport, tourism and recreation. They contribute to natural and cultural heritage protection, improve traffic situation and provide opportunities for recreation, tourism and a healthier lifestyle. They also encourage the sustainable use of local resources. Greenways encourage citizens, representatives, authorities and businessmen to join in the planning activities and improve life in their communities. Česká Spořitelna Foundation is the general partner of the programme.
The programme is designed to help improve the quality of public spaces in towns and villages. Its principle is to involve citizens, local governments, businesses as well as NGOs not only in the planning processes but also in the reconstruction itself. The programme helps to build spaces characterised by their practicality as well as aesthetic attractiveness, which are to enhance social, cultural and commercial life of the particular municipality.
The programme was founded as a reaction to the current state of automobile transportation, which, from a long term perspective, does not appear sustainable. The programme focuses on supporting sustainable means of transportation such as public transportation and cycling or walking, and promotes traffic calming and construction of safe routes to schools for schoolchildren. The programme closely cooperates with the BESIP programme run by the Ministry of Transport. Škoda Auto Company (the Routes through Town competition) and AXA financial group (Green Light project) have become new general partners of the programme.
The programme focuses on helping primary and secondary school children participate in the life of civil society. Initiatives such as preservation of local cultural and natural heritage, school gardens and educational paths construction and nature protection are supported through this programme. The programme has been limited to the Pardubický and Královéhradecký region. Toyota Motor Europe is the general partner of the programme.
The programme promotes sustainable development in the Kolín region and in the surrounding area of TPCA motor plant. It also helps to keep economic, social and environmental factors balanced. It achieves its goals by motivating NGOs, schools and municipalities to become more involved in the creation of public spaces and making life in villages better. The programme is financed by the Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile Company and administered by the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation.
Through this programme funds of the Austrian Ministry of Environment are administered and distributed to NGOs in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. These resources are distributed through a closed grant system. The main themes supported are selection of locations for nuclear waste storage, debates on the future of nuclear energy in the Czech Republic and the right of municipalities to participate in proceedings according to a nuclear law.
